The Selected Device Has No Output Controls Rating: 3,1/5 4145 reviews

My sound has stopped. In the lower right hand corner is the volume button but has a big x on it, when highlighted it says ' No Audio Output Device is installed' where did it go? However when my son plays a game on the internet there is sound for thegame and the x on the volume goes away, but when I try to play music there's nothing and my computer freezes up. When I shut off the computer and turn it back on the volume icon is back with an x on it. Any idea's what's going on and how to fix it? REBOOT after each driver installation.NOTE: Sound drivers often rollback so check the version after installation and the reboot tosee if the version you installed is there, if not repeat the install - reboot until it is. The selected device has no output controls in. If that doesn't help, let's confirm some settngs. Under 'Properties for' set to 'Built-In Output'. Output Volume is not Muted in the check box at the bottom. If above suggestions yield no results, let me know and we'll go from there. It's just that the volume controls on my Mac can't be used. I have to adjust the volume using the Monitor knob on the Scarlett. After many years with an M-Audio interface and being able to use my Mac's volume controls normally I didn't expect this which is why I thought it wasn't working at all.

Thanks, David. I think I may have figured it out, but I'm not thrilled about the result. It turns out that the signal from my Mac is getting to the Scarlett and through to the speakers.
