Home / World of Warcraft / Classes / Tanking Guide. Tanking Guide Battle for Azeroth (BfA ). This concludes the tanking guide. If you have followed us all the way to the end, you now know exactly what a great tank is, and what you need to do to achieve that. And remember that the best quality of a great tank is confidence! Remember that.

The one you can play the best on. No, really, while there is a 'best' and 'worst' tank spec, it doesn't mean everyone should play the 'best' spec. If you're really good at the worst spec and awful at the best spec the player skill factored in will make you a better tank than if you had played the 'best' spec, as the gap between best and worst is minimal enough that player skill matters.

That said, there are some annoying weaknesses present in Blood - which is considered the worst spec right now - while there are some stupid strengths with Guardian druids - who are considered the best - so there is reason to be annoyed if you're a long time tank. 11:14 AMPosted by The one you can play the best on. This more or less is the truth of the matter.

Tanking mostly depends on a skill set which is independent of the class you're playing on; beyond that, it's just a matter of figuring out the quirks of the class or game you're playing on. If you can tank on any one class, you can probably tank on another once you get your bearings; you can even translate those skills into other MMORPGs quite readily, the skills I've learned in WoW over the years are just as invaluable as they are in FFXIV. 11:14 AMPosted by That said, there are some annoying weaknesses present in Blood - which is considered the worst spec right now - while there are some stupid strengths with Guardian druids - who are considered the best - so there is reason to be annoyed if you're a long time tank. This would be an example of the aforementioned 'quirks' which each tank class comes with. And the generally transitional nature of the buff/nerf cycle.

One particular 'class' may be best, but it has never reached the point that no particular tank class hasn't been 'viable'. At least since WotLK. Vanilla and TBC were a little different, when classes were often restricted to particular roles (there was often only one set bonus on tier sets, especially during Vanilla), but things did start to change and all tank classes became viable and stayed that way.

One general trend with tanks is that they tend to stay tanks, and in many cases outright refuse to switch classes when the buff/nerf cycle changes things on them; as with the nature of tanking being that the player is more important than the class, the buff/nerf cycle becomes all but irrelevant because an experienced tank is worth their weight in gold (presuming their actually good at it, which is often the case if they've stuck with the role for that long). Every so often an experienced tank may give the role a rest and they may take up DPS or healing. But you'll never get the tank out of them. They'll still watch the fights like a tank and respond to situations as they would expect themselves to do if they were tanking. I still tank on both my Warrior and my DK, and to be honest I'd say it's most irrelevant which one I'm on at the time. I also have a Paladin alt at level 110, a Monk alt at level 100, and a Demon Hunter alt at level 102; all of them favour their tank specs, and aside from general familiarity and gearing issues (much more experienced and geared on both my warrior and DK), I don't think it really matters which one I'm playing. Heck, I've even leveled all three tank jobs to the level cap in FFXIV; even there, it's just a matter of preference for me.

They're all viable in that game, though quite arguably the balance isn't quite as good as it is in WoW. But still, you can make any of them work in any situation. A tank is a tank is a tank. The only question is how experienced they are. 12:01 PMPosted by So it's universally know that the most OP tank in Legion is the guardian druid. So many people have switch to Guardian druid for tanking because of the overpowered-ness of the spec. You should try it.

It's not too hard either. Only if you care about math on high-end Mythic fights.

Guardians lack basic elements other tanks have, like a way to interrupt a ranged enemy or bring it closer to you so you can actually tank it. There's also a huge gap between%% based tanks (like druids) and absorb tanks (like warriors). An absorb tank like a Prot Warrior will do far better in standard content like Mythic dungeons and low-end raids.

Put most simply (and using some made up numbers for clarity), imagine that a%% tank (druid) shaves off half the damage of every hit. Whereas the absorb tank (warrior) absorbs 500k from every hit. Against trash in a Mythic+ dungeon where everything hits for 600k:.The%% tank (druid) takes 300k per hit.The absorb tank (warrior) takes 100k per hit. Absorb tank wins. Now picture a high-end Mythic raid boss that hits for 1.2 million per hit:.The%% tank (druid) takes 600k per hit.The absorb tank (warrior) takes 700k per hit.%% tank wins. TLDR: Different tanks are best against different types of content.

But tanking is all about understanding and managing monster behavior. Not about your rotation or what class you're playing. 11:59 AMPosted by What if someone came to you and asked you what the 'best' DPS class is so they can play it? How would you answer? Not even kidding if anyone asked me I'd tell them to play a frost mage.

As far as tanks go I can only speak from my own perspective from healing the content I've done. If anyone would ask me what tank they should play I'd tell them to play a druid and highly suggest they don't play a brewmaster. I love monks, heck I play one but you brewmasters out there scare the crap out of me when I have to heal you.

12:33 PMPosted by Guardian druid's have an 80% dmg mitigation ability which you can have with almost 100% uptime coupled with their stupid amounts of self heals makes it the most OP tank i'd say in a long long time. If you watch Method or any other competitive mythic raiding guild, it's pretty obvious that guardian druids are ridiculously overpowered. I'm quite aware of what bears can do in Mythic raids, since I play one myself, thank you.

I'm also very aware that all expansion I've been able to go into Mythic and Mythic+ dungeons with my Prot Warrior buddy as a 'healer' and I don't even need to heal him because well-played Warriors take zero (literally, zero) damage in standard content. I also seriously doubt that the OP is looking to raid Mythic Nighthold.

Best

Different tanks are good for different things and there are plenty of badly-played bears who get eaten alive in Mythic dungeons who would have a much easier time on an absorb tank. 12:33 PMPosted by Guardian druid's have an 80% dmg mitigation ability which you can have with almost 100% uptime coupled with their stupid amounts of self heals makes it the most OP tank i'd say in a long long time. I remember going into Mythic Arcway as soon as it opened as a healer, since none of our guild healers had the rep yet to go inside. I had no trinkets, no optimized resto gear, and zero points in my resto artifact weapon. I just stood back and healed the DPS.

I could (and did) sometimes just stand out of range of the warrior and heal the DPS and the warrior's health bar never moved. They're that self-sufficient on lower end (5-man) content. 12:44 PMPosted by I'm also very aware that all expansion I've been able to go into Mythic and Mythic+ dungeons with my Prot Warrior buddy as a 'healer' and I don't even need to heal him because well-played Warriors take zero (literally, zero) damage in standard content.

Most tank can do that thought, doing 9 or below with 4 dps is not that hard for any tank. So yeah we might be able to do it easier, but who cares what a tank can do when you over gear the content. When mobs start hitting hard there is no way to self sustain(only way to heal is to get a kill and victory rush).

The way ignore pains work(especially after the nerf), there is no way to avoid all the incoming damage, we have small absorbs that go down just as fast as we put them up, our hp will go down over the course of 6 seconds if we dont get healed.
